25 year anniversary film

The Black Heart Foundation

The brief

The Black Heart Foundation provides grants to young people who would otherwise be unable to access education, helping to remove financial barriers and open up opportunities that might not have been possible.

They asked us to create a film as part of their 25-year celebration, aimed at potential funders. The film needed to reflect on the impact they’ve already had, while also encouraging further support to continue and expand their work.

It had to help audiences understand both the personal and wider value of investing in education, showing not just individual success stories, but the broader importance of access and inclusion.

The challenge was finding the right balance. The film needed to celebrate what the charity has achieved without suggesting the work was done, and to tell honest, sometimes difficult stories without losing a sense of optimism.

It also couldn’t feel like a sales pitch or a traditional explainer. Relying too heavily on facts, statistics, or internal voices would have distanced the audience from the real impact. The story had to be led by the people who had lived it.

What we did

We built the film around a series of interwoven conversations.

We spoke with five beneficiaries of the foundation, alongside voices from within the organisation, including the CEO and a trustee. This allowed us to explore both personal experiences and the wider context around access to education, without losing sight of the individuals at the centre of it.

The film is interview-led, captured in a controlled studio environment. This wasn’t just a practical decision, it was a conceptual one. By removing contributors from their environments, we created a neutral space where each story could stand on its own, free from context or distraction. It allowed the film to feel less like a series of case studies and more like a shared conversation, with each voice carrying equal weight.

Rather than structuring the film chronologically, we intercut between contributors, drawing out shared themes around inclusion, exclusion, opportunity, and the long-term impact of support. This approach helped position the film as a broader conversation, rather than a collection of separate case studies.

Throughout, the focus was on maintaining a careful tonal balance. We allowed space for the more difficult aspects of each story, but made sure these moments were held alongside a sense of progress and possibility. The aim was to create something that felt honest and grounded, while still carrying a sense of celebration that reflected the foundation’s 25-year milestone.

The result

The final film presents a series of honest, reflective conversations about access to education, showing both the barriers that exist and the impact of removing them.

By placing lived experience at the centre, the importance of the foundation’s work becomes clear without needing to rely on heavy explanation. The audience is able to connect with the people behind the stories, while also understanding the wider significance of the charity’s mission.

The film continues to sit front and centre on the foundation’s website, with strong feedback from the client on both the final piece and the production process, landing as something that feels thoughtful, engaging, and aligned with their long-term goals.
