Spotlight film series

British Association of Social Workers

The brief

The British Association of Social Workers wanted a series of films that could speak to the full breadth of the profession. That meant current members, practicing social workers who were not yet members, and students preparing to enter the field.

The challenge was broad but clear. The films needed to demonstrate the value of BASW membership in a way that felt human, credible, and relevant to very different audiences. Rather than relying on corporate messaging, the aim was to connect through real experiences from people working across social work.

We created six spotlight films, each centred on an individual social worker. Through their personal stories, the audience could understand both the realities of the profession and the role BASW plays in supporting careers, standards, advocacy, and community.

There were important balances to strike. We couldn’t simply talk about BASW without the human context that makes membership meaningful. Equally, we couldn’t focus only on personal stories and lose sight of why the organisation matters. The films also needed to acknowledge the challenges of social work without becoming overly heavy, and represent a broad range of practitioners without narrowing the audience.

A bad version of this project would have been a set of flat talking heads or a press-junket style interview series. Without warmth and personality, the connection would have been lost.

What we did

We built the spotlight series around six honest, career-led portraits of real social workers.

Each film combined sit-down interviews in a studio setting with animated graphic sequences that expanded key moments in each contributor’s story. This allowed us to move beyond a standard interview format and create something more dynamic, using visuals to illustrate experiences, explain ideas, and carry the audience through the narrative.

We deliberately filmed in a large studio with a plain backdrop so the transitions into these graphic scenes felt seamless. The camera could move away from the contributor, enter an illustrated scene, then return naturally to the interview. This gave the films a flexible visual language while keeping the contributor at the centre.

The production style was intentionally clean and high-end. Strong lighting, contrast, and careful framing helped elevate the series and reflect the professionalism of both the contributors and BASW itself.

Across all the films, consistency mattered. While each person had their own story, the visual approach, storytelling structure, and human tone helped the films feel connected as a single campaign rather than a set of unrelated interviews.

Most importantly, we focused on stories first. We invited contributors to speak about how they entered social work, the moments that shaped them, and why BASW became meaningful in their careers. That emotional honesty is what made the membership message credible.

The result

The final spotlight series offers a genuine snapshot of modern social work through the voices of people living it every day.

By allowing audiences to recognise parts of themselves in the contributors, the films create a natural bridge to BASW and the value of membership. The message feels earned through lived experience rather than imposed through marketing.

The series continues to be used across BASW’s website and social channels, forming a key part of how the organisation communicates its value to current and future members.
